The S.S. Tilawa was a British-Indian passenger and cargo ship that met a tragic end during World War II. On November 23, 1942, the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while traveling from Bombay to Durban, South Africa. The attack occurred in the Indian Ocean, about 930 miles northeast of the Seychelles, sinking the vessel. Onboard were 958 passengers, crew, and a valuable cargo that included silver bullion.
